Tracey’s Story

After suffering from endometriosis most of my life I was diagnosed in my twenties.

Following two surgeries I also visited a herbalist who tested my food intolerances, vitamin and mineral levels.  These results indicated a huge range of intolerances, many of which I had already worked out and tried to limit my intake (bread, oats, milk, beer, pasta, etc).  But at this time my primary focus was sorting out my endo and I had no knowledge of gluten intolerance.

Several years down the track my symptoms had got worse and after reading a newly purchased book on Endo I read about the link to wheat intolerance and thought, “hey that’s me!”

I then decided to take the bull by the horns and give it a real go.

I went to my doctor and explained what I wanted to do, she sent me for a blood test which turned out negative (since then I have read about all the tests that should have been done at the same time!)…

I rang up the local hospital dietitian who didn’t want to give me any support without a positive blood test.

This lack of support left me at a low for a while as I knew that going wheat free, gluten free is what I needed to do, it just took me a while to locate foods and information to guide me on my way.

My body is certainly thanking me… my husband is too.  I feel heaps healthier, more active and happy. My skin is more vibrant and I’m not so grumpy, bloated or sore!

I have found that here in New Zealand we have a huge range of gluten free foods and more and more cafes and restaurants are cooking gluten free items.

So its not too much of a struggle to find somewhere and something to eat when out and about – just a little research before hand.

I have found the internet my best source of information and recipes as I had been finding it difficult to find savory recipes (muffins, frittata, rosti are my faves).

This site is a great resource, as is www.doctorgluten.com.
