Faye’s Story

I would love to tell you my story. It probably isn’t very unique, but it’s mine.

In 1998, my husband and I separated with very different views as to why. I was overcome with stress at that time, so I assumed the diarrhea, stomach aches, and weight loss was due to the stress.

But as time passed, the stress became less and the symptoms grew.

Soon I had pain in the bones of my feet; so much so that it was extremely hard to walk. I couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs without gasping for breath.

I had an irregular heart beat that scared me to the point of tears. I thought I would leave this world the same way my dad did, with a heart attack.

I finally went to the doctor and was referred to a gastroenterologist.

After a biopsy, I was diagnosed with Celiac. I was told that I would have this disease the rest of my life. And that really scared me. There were so many things already that I couldn’t eat; I was totally overwhelmed.

But, after a few months on the diet, I gained weight, my stomach stopped hurting, my heart went back to normal (for me anyway) , and my outlook on life completely changed.

I also stopped smoking just before I was diagnosed. I thought the breathing problems were due to the smoking.

I am so thankful that my doctor had the foresight to send me to a specialist. If she hadn’t, I probably wouldn’t be here to write this. And now life is great!
