Cheri’s Story
For years I have not been a bread or pasta eater and wondered if I was allergic to wheat.
I have a thyroid disorder and my thyroid doesn’t work without medication. I didn’t realize how important the thyroid is either, so I wasn’t being very consistent taking my meds.
Several years back I developed a very serious case of anemia, and my red blood count was very low. I ended up having to have numerous blood transfusions over the years.
It would be 1-2 a year for several years. The doctor couldn’t figure out the problem.
Then, I noticed extreme bloating and gas all the time. I am a 110 lb. woman 46 years and I looked 6 months pregnant, my stomach was so huge. I was also quite constipated a lot.
Then eventually, when I would have a bowel movement, there would be a lot of bright red blood in the toilet.
After many tests after the last transfusion, they came to the conclusion I was wheat intolerant and probably gluten intolerant as well.
I was sent to a nutritionist and cut all wheat out of my diet.
I also realized my thyroid played a huge part in all of this. So for the past year I don’t eat wheat and I take my meds and my blood count has stayed at 13.5.
Haemoglobin should be about 14, and the doctors transfuse at 9.5. When I need my last transfusion it was 6.4.
I am totally better now and didn’t realize how sick I actually was until I felt better. It had been so gradual; I didn’t notice how bad I was.
Now I watch my diet very close and take my meds. I no longer look pregnant anymore. Thank God. I wish it would be easier to know about this disorder so people wouldn’t have to suffer as long with it.
I was the one that suggested what to look for with my doctors. They had not
thought of that.
I researched a lot to find out what it could be. I was surprised that they didn’t look for it sooner. It is very treatable with your diet.
I can’t believe such a potentially serious condition is so easily better with the right diet.
Medication is rarely needed. Thanks for all the recipes you have made available for us.
Your website is great! It makes eating wheat and gluten-free so much easier.
Sincerely,
Cheri
